St. Annes Maternity Hospital

Do you still need to pack your pregnancy hospital bag? If you do, you aren’t alone.

It’s stressful enough to run to the hospital with only Braxton Hicks contractions. The last thing you need is to run out of the house with items you tossed in a grocery bag.

Here some tips for getting ready to go to the hospital:

• Don’t wait till the last minute to pack. You never know when the last minute will be. Many pregnant women deliver before or after the so called “due date.”

• Bring an empty bag. You’ll likely be bringing home a lot more than you brought with you, not including the baby!

• Pack "time-passing" extras for your partner or labor coach. Waiting for the baby to come can create lots of anxiety. Having something else to do really helps.

• Bring snacks for your partner. Pack a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, chips, or a candy bar.

• Make a list of questions you might have about caring for your newborn. Also, you’ll likely get a chance to talk to a lactation consultant, so think of some questions in advance.

• Read up on baby blues and postpartum depression, and tell your partner to read up on it too. Being prepared is the best way to cope with these unsettling symptoms.

Go ahead and plan for that amazing day, when you drop everything and go! The best feeling when labor hits is to know your pregnancy hospital bag is ready.
